LATE USE OF THE 14-CENT RATE TO THE UK

A cover showing a relatively late example of the 7-cent rate to the UK with matching 7-cent registration, rate period ending August 1, 1894.


7c Registered Cover 1894

Registered cover to East Dulwich, London, dated MR 14 94.

Rate: 7c postage plus 7c registration = franked at 14c.
  • Circular registration handstamp in black in use between 1884 - 1903.
  • On 1 January 1891 the Union letter rate was reduced from 10c to 7c.
  • On 30 March the rate was put back to 10c, although the 7c rate continued for letters to the U.K.
  • A new rates table was published on 30 March 1891.
  • From 1 August the letter rate to the U.K. reverted to 10c per 1/2oz and registration fee to 10c.
